A historical marker identifies the tragic and bloody Pottawatomie Massacre that took place just north of town on Pottawatomie Creek in late May 1856. John Brown and a band of abolitionists massacred a number of proslavery men in retaliation for the raid on Lawrence that had occurred days earlier.
