Battle of the Spurs Historical Marker

Holton, KS | Jackson County

From 4th in Holton, 7½ miles north on U.S. 75 to 286. With 11 liberated slaves from Missouri, abolitionist John Brown reached an Underground Railroad stop just south of this marker in January 1859. When a federal posse attempted to block Brown's passage, he crossed the high-water creek and charged toward his would-be assailants. The posse spurred their horses and fled from this bloodless battle.
