The Flint Hills Nature Trail for hiking, biking, and equestrians is 118 miles long and runs between Osawatomie and Herington, covering five counties. The trail is the longest in the state and intersects with the Prairie Spirit Trail in Ottawa at 1st and Walnut. The iron railroad bridge that crosses the Marais des Cygnes River, about 1Β½ miles west of Ottawa, is a scenic spot and within reach with a moderate walk.
The best place to start your trail experience is at Legacy Square at 1st and Walnut, with a bicycle shop nearby. You can park here and get trail information before heading east or west (the Prairie Spirit Trail goes south). Another place to park and get started is at E. 7th and Mason.
