Barnard's life work was with rural schools, mainly in Rush County. He was an innovator and introduced his techniques at his experimental school, Entre Nous College which he started near McCracken. He went on to become a much beloved librarian at the LaCrosse High School and later the public library, which was named for him. See a collection of his artifacts and books at the Barnard Library, 521 Elm.
