NOTE: As of June 2026, the elevator on the east has been torn down. We have retained the photo of it in the gallery for archival purposes.
Two circa 1915 wood-frame grain elevators stand high against the sky east of town along U.S. 50. The one to the east is a cribbed structure built of 2ᕁ4 lumber and covered with steel siding patterned to look like brick. The second, the Gano elevator (NRHP), is a wood-studded structure covered with galvanized steel sheets. It is one of the few grain elevators in Kansas listed on the national register. The two structures are reminders of a time of intense competition in the grain storage industry in southwest Kansas, when even the smallest town had two, three, or more elevators to store grain before it was shipped across country by rail.
