In 1833, when the Ottawa tribe was removed to a reservation in present Franklin County, the Reverend John Tecumseh "Tauy" (pronounced tau-ee) Jones, a half Chippewa, assisted the Indians in establishing their new home. To provide a college setting for the Ottawas, Jones helped found Ottawa University in 1865, but before the school opened, the Ottawa tribe was removed to Oklahoma. The limestone and oldest campus building dates to 1869 and is named for Jones. (NRHP)
