The 1825 Santa Fe Trail survey team, headed by George Sibley, camped on this site on August 31. An interpretive marker describes the setting in 1825, and a wayside exhibit provides the site history. Sibley, appointed by President John Quincy Adams as one of three commissioners to oversee the Santa Fe Trail survey, referred in his diary to the Cliffs of Soft Rock (sandstone), the remains of which can still be seen at this site.
