A drive into the Smoky Hill River Valley takes you to the small town of Pfeifer, settled by Volga Germans in 1876-1878. Notice that the landscape changes quickly as you near the sandy river bottom. From 3rd and Old U.S. 40 in Victoria, go 9 miles south on Pfeifer, then ¾ mile west on Schoenchen.
