In 1990 the Kansas legislature designated the 10-mile stretch of U.S. 75 from Holton to Netawaka the Danny J. Petersen Memorial Highway. The road pays tribute to Specialist Fourth Class Petersen, the only Kansan awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for service in the Vietnam War. Petersen's final resting place is in Netawaka Cemetery, ½ mile east of U.S. 75 on K-9. His grave is in the cemetery's northeast quadrant and is marked by a simple white military stone.
