This street is one of only a few remaining references to the Great White Way marketing plan that originated in 1914 to promote businesses along what was then a gravel route. Because it was before the days of billboards and advertising signs, the promoters painted every other telephone pole white from Chicago to Colorado Springs, 1,161 miles, to draw attention to the highway. The current K-9 highway was the Kansas portion of the Great White Way.
