On the west side of the Topeka Performing Arts Center an eight-foot bronze statue of a female mariachi player honors Mariachi Estrella de Topeka. The troupe of seven women formed the first all-female mariachi group in Kansas. Tragically four members were killed when the walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City collapsed in 1981.
