NATIVE AMERICAN

Burnett's Mound

Topeka, KS | Shawnee County

Burnett’s Mound rises as the defining landmark of Skyline Park, where 4½ miles of trails wind through prairie and wooded areas. At the top, you’ll be standing at the highest point in Topeka, with interpretive signs that share the story of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and Chief Abram Burnett. In 1838, Burnett and his family were forcibly removed from Indiana to Kansas as part of the Trail of Death. A large man said to weigh 450 pounds, he later settled on the mound, where he lived until his death in 1870, creating economic opportunities by serving travelers passing through on the Oregon Trail.
