On the square's northwest corner, a granite monument and bronze plaque memorialize the letter from Lincoln's Little Correspondent, Grace Bedell Billings. When Grace was 11 years old and living in Westfield, New York, she wrote to Abraham Lincoln suggesting that if he grew a beard her brothers would vote for him for president. Lincoln took the girl's advice and was duly elected in 1860. The monument also incorporates Lincoln's reply. Grace moved to Delphos as an adult.
