Here a historical marker relates the Kidder massacre and its aftermath. One mile east on 77 is the battle site, where in 1867 Lieutenant Lyman Kidder and his 10-man patrol were confronted by Cheyennes. No one in Kidder's company survived. George Custer and an advance party of the Seventh U.S. Cavalry found the soldiers' mutilated bodies. The tragedy is further told at the High Plains Museum in Goodland and at the Fort Wallace Museum.
