The Fort Dodge military post was founded in 1865 to protect the Santa Fe Trail from Indian attack. It is the oldest permanent settlement in the area. The complex became a soldiers' home in 1890 after the fort closed. The Kansas Soldiers' Home is still open to military veterans and their spouses, and it's not unusual to see citizens putting around in their golf carts in this friendly town. Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour by following the historic markers and stone signs. These tell about this unique community and identify its historic buildings, including stone homes built before 1875. Fort Dodge has all that its residents need, including assisted living quarters, a nursing facility, medical care, and more.
