Just west of the Kansas Soldiers' Home a wood-framed sign notes that Fort Dodge was the western terminus on the 1867 Fort Hays-Fort Dodge Road. For about a year this supply route connected Hays to the Santa Fe Trail that ran through Fort Dodge. Usage of the road ended as railroads continued pushing westward.
