A 38-foot concrete cross was erected in 1975 to commemorate the site where Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado crossed the Arkansas River and on June 29, 1541, celebrated the first Mass west of the Mississippi. From the parking lot, take a short walk north over a little bridge and past yucca and other High Plains vegetation to a slight hilltop where the cross stands.
