From K-96, 2 ΒΎ miles west on 10th (W. Barton County), 1 mile south on Airport, then just west on 6th. Great Bend Army Air Field opened in 1943 as a B-29 bomber training facility. A symbolic memorial with intersecting arches represents the emblem of the Global 20th Air Force (the 20th was established in 1944 to perform bombardment missions against Japan). A miniature B-29 cast in stainless steel is the memorial's centerpiece. Learn more about the WWII training facility at the Barton County Historical Museum.
