The drive west from Elgin is winding, tree-lined, and scenery-packed with rock outcroppings bordering the narrow unpaved road. When you come to the little white Frontier Church, you've made it to Hewins. In 1886 the Santa Fe railway made a station stop here for shipping cattle owned by Ed Hewins, one of the largest cattle ranchers in the world at the time.
