General Colin Powell initiated this sculpture project to honor African American soldiers of the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry regiments. The result is a larger-than-life, 13-foot bronze monument of a buffalo soldier astride his horse. Within the monument area also are several busts of soldiers. Inscriptions explain each one's relevance to black military history. (8 Wonders of Kansas People)
