Chief Black Dog was born around 1780 and for a time his migratory tribe's base camp was near present Coffeyville. In 1803 his Osages blazed what is now known as the Black Dog Trail, a 200-mile passage from present Baxter Springs to present Oxford. Thousands of Osages followed it on their semi-annual trek to hunt buffalo. Eventually, in the 20th century, the trail evolved into highways. 7th Street was part of the trail and is designated by a historical marker north of the Historical Museum.
