Because Atchison is one of the oldest towns (established in 1855) in Kansas and once supported many wealthy residents, it has one of the most impressive collections of historic homes of any town in the state. The architectural styles of these grand and lovely houses range from Gothic to Italianate. The greatest concentration of well-preserved residences is north of downtown along 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Dozens of other homes also can be found throughout this town, which boasts more than 30 properties on the national register. Self-guided tour brochures are available at the Visitor Information Center, 200 S. 10th.
