Settled in 1858, Burlingame immediately took advantage of freight wagon traffic traveling the Santa Fe Trail. The road through town was made wide enough for oxen teams to circle the wagons for camping, restocking supplies, or making repairs. In 1922 brick and concrete replaced the dusty road, but businesses had already been established along either side, so the street's great width (94 feet from curb to curb) remained. Today's Santa Fe Avenue is so wide that cars park down the middle!
