The cross timbers of the Chautauqua Hills is an old, even ancient, forest of post and blackjack oaks, with the oldest post oak dating to the 1720s. The best way to become familiar with the vegetation of this rare forest is by hiking its trails'a total of 15 miles of hiking and biking trails surround the lake. The Ancient Trees of the Cross Timbers Trail is an easy one-mile trek through the forest with accompanying interpretive signage. Its trailhead is adjacent to the gatehouse at Toronto Point off K-105. Other trails include the Chautauqua Hills Trail (1½ miles) and the Overlook Trail (1¼ miles), which provides the highest elevation overlooking the lake. Cross Timbers Park is especially beautiful to visit during the fall. State park entrance charge. Cabins available. Reservations required.
