
Also known as the Eureka Ditch, this irrigation canal was the 1883 brainchild of Asa Soule. His plan was to build an irrigation ditch that would direct water from the Arkansas River west of Ingalls almost 100 miles east to Coon Creek in Edwards County. His canal did not work as he hoped, but traces of it can still be seen east of town starting at 13105 M and continuing east on the north side of U.S. 50. Mounds of dirt excavated during construction mark the route. One of the giant pumps for drawing water from the Arkansas into the Eureka Canal is exhibited outside the Santa Fe Trail Museum.
