SANTA FE TRAIL

Santa Fe Trail Markers

Ingalls, KS | Gray County

A DAR trail marker in front of the museum, 204 S. Main, was originally placed along the trail's "mountain route" (a northwesterly route following the Arkansas River to Bent's Fort, Colorado), but it was moved to this site when U.S. 50 was under construction. A second DAR marker, at Main and Kansas, indicates where the trail left the "mountain route" south of present Ingalls to connect to the "dry route," a shorter but more dangerous journey.
