SANTA FE TRAIL

Santa Fe Trail Fry's Ruts

Around the county, KS | Rice County

From Lyons, 15½ miles east on U.S. 56, five miles south on 31, then 1¾ mile west on P. A small sign directs you into the pasture (see picture below) where you'll continue about 300 yards south to an iron cutout of a wagon and oxen. From this vantage point you can see the historic ruts to the east and west and can imagine the pioneer journey in covered wagons. The wagon trail through this pasture, now owned by the Fisher family (descendants of the Fry family), is the route that led to or from the lower crossing of the Little Arkansas River less than 1 mile to the northeast.
