In 1858 the town of Denver, Colorado (then at the western edge of Kansas Territory), was platted here in the Rowena Hotel by a group of Lecompton men. Denver is named for Kansas territorial governor James Denver. The structure deteriorated to a point that it had be to torn down in 1947. The city purchased the lots in 1982 and created a park named in honor of the historic hotel.
