The reason that Piqua has even has one paved street (2nd) is because it is part of Old U.S. 54. One mile east on 2nd (becomes 140) you'll see a 1921 marker for the Kansas Federal Aid Project, which helped pay for the highway, which was much narrower in those days. The marker stands beside the cemetery fence and is on the Woodson and Allen county line.
