When you arrive at the sunflower sculpture made of railroad spikes you'll be higher than anyone else in Kansas. Congratulations! The site was surveyed in 1961 and designated by the U.S. Geological Survey as the highest elevation point in Kansasβ4,039 feet above sea level. In the late 1970s Ed Harold commemorated this site, homesteaded by his grandparents in 1906, with his unique welded sunflower sculpture. From this vantage point you may see cattle (after all, you are in their pasture) grazing on buffalo grass. And keep your eyes open for jackrabbits, coyotes, antelope, deer, pocket gophers, and foxes. If you time it right, you can look toward Colorado and watch a sunset explode into rich colors in the western sky.
