Seven Benedictine sisters founded the academy in 1863 as a school for girls. Sixty years later, in 1923, it became Mount St. Scholastica College. Perhaps the most impressive structure on the campus is the 1901 red-brick monastery (NRHP), built in Renaissance design. Gothic touches are evident in its tall square tower and in the flying buttresses of its north wing chapel.
