The hilltop marker is visible almost as soon as you enter the Big Basin preserve. Originally a loose mound of stones, the marker was placed here in the 1870s for early travelers, settlers, and cattle drovers to indicate water at St. Jacob's Well. Later the stones were cemented together to create a more permanent structure, which was named Living Waters Monument. In 1958 a plaque, which included scripture from John 4:10 and a description of the Plains Indians and St. Jacob's Well, was placed on the monument by the county historical society. You can see that this plaque is missing, stolen by vandals.
