Until he was hanged on December 2, 1859, for raiding a federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, John Brown was one of the most notorious figures during the period leading up to the Civil War. His crusading life is interpreted inside this log cabin that belonged to Brown's half sister, Florella, and her husband, the Reverend Samuel Adair. Brown lived here with them for a time. The cabin originally stood a mile west of town but was moved to this location in 1912. It is complete with family furnishings and belongings and Civil War weapons. A limestone pergola was built over the cabin in 1928 to help preserve it. (NRHP)
