HISTORIC CHURCH

Independence Historic Church and Residence

Independence, KS | Montgomery County

Gothic Revival fans will appreciate the First Presbyterian Church built in 1928 and modeled after Melrose Abbey in Scotland. Just to the south of the castle-like church, the yellow-brick mansion of Harry Sinclair stands at 215 S. 5th. Sinclair, founder of Sinclair Oil, built this grand Neoclassical house in 1909. Among its many stand-out features is the double-enclosed porch with six large stone pillars over the main entrance.
