Historical Driving Tour

Girard, KS | Crawford County

Girard's history awaits you on this tour, which includes the 1887 home (NRHP) of publisher J.A. Wayland; the Haldeman-Julius House (RHKP), home of the Little Blue Books publishers; the J.T. and Anna Leonard Home (NRHP), the largest home ever built in Girard in a stunning Queen Anne style; the J.E. Raymond House (NRHP), identifiable by its "onion dome"; and the home of Henry Laurens Call. Call was a Socialist lawyer, author, and lecturer, and in 1908 he built the first airplane west of the Mississippi. Call named it the Mayfly because "it may fly!" But it didn't. A 19-site driving tour brochure is available at the front desk of the public library (see hours below).
