In the center of Highland Cemetery the towering, white marble obelisk (a miniature Washington Monument) was erected by the American Legion to honor soldiers who died during WWI and whose bodies were not brought home. The memorial is inscribed, 'In memory of those whose final resting place is known to God alone.'
