Southeast of the chapel, six stones, each inscribed 'Unknown U.S. Soldier,' form a memorial to county soldiers killed during WWI. Buried nearby is Sherman County's sole black Civil War veteran W.M Johnson. Brook Berringer, legendary Nebraska Cornhusker quarterback killed in an airplane crash two days before the 1996 NFL draft, is buried beside his father, Warren. Cornhusker fans often leave mementos. A kiosk provides the location of the grave, which is also marked by a Cornhusker flag.
