Fred Harvey established the first restaurant chain in the United States, tying it to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. His first restaurant opened in the Santa Fe depot in Topeka in 1876, and in 1883 the Harvey Girls became part of the Harvey House system. Fred and his family moved into this home in 1883, and although Fred died in 1901, the family remained until 1944. Open by appointment. (NRHP)
