Crossdale Barn

Hiawatha, KS | Brown County

From Oregon, 1½ miles north on U.S. 73. Look closely at the white prairie style barn on Wayne Starr's farm and notice the interesting painting under the hay hood. In researching the property's origin, Wayne learned that in 1855 President Franklin Pierce gave Abigail Crossdale this section of land as recompense for her husband's death in the War of 1812. Because she lived in the East, Abigail sold the land, never having seen it. When Wayne purchased it in the 1950s, he honored the farm's original owner by creating a Crossdale coat of arms and painting it on the barn.
