Hiawatha, settled in 1857, is named for the American Indian in Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha." Oregon is the name of the main street, so called because the Oregon Trail passed just southwest of town. Parallel streets north of Oregon are named for Indian tribes that lived north of the trail. Streets to the south carry the names of tribes that resided south of the trail.
