A huge kinetic biplane sculpture stands as a memorial to Octave Chanute, a railroad and bridge engineer and an early aviation pioneer. The town's namesake never lived here, but he was responsible for building the railroad that came through the town. The biplane (representing the Wright brothers' aircraft) and life-sized silhouettes turn with the wind, and bronze plaques explain Chanute's contribution to aviation. This amazing sculpture was dedicated in 2003.
