Settlers and fortune seekers heading west traveled through parts of Doniphan County from the early 1840s through 1865. In 2014, 59 signs were installed to mark the California Trail through the county. To find the first trail marker, from S. 3rd in Wathena, go ΒΌ mile east and south on U.S. 36, just east on Saint Joseph, then north on Treece. Proceed to subsequent markers by following the arrows. You will end up east of Fanning at K-7 and 230.
