William H. "Bill" Burke, a prominent stockman, grain man, and banker in Little River, ran on the Democratic ticket for governor in 1940 but was narrowly defeated. The 1921 red-brick former hotel bears his name, and "Burke Grain and Live Stock Co." is largely embossed on the old red-brick scale house beside the grain elevator.
