HISTORY

BOD Markers

Russell Springs, KS | Logan County

In the 1960s octogenarian Howard Raynesford of Ellis erected 138 limestone markers along the Butterfield Overland Despatch (BOD) route from Fort Harker to the Colorado state line. The markers are placed at most public road crossings and at stage station sites. A notch at the top of the marker indicates the direction of the trail. Russell Springs can claim two BOD markers, one at K-25 (Armstrong) and Vine, and the second on the east side of town, just south from Broadway on 270.
