Baxter Springs Historical Museum

Baxter Springs, KS | Cherokee County

Route 66, lead and zinc mining, Civil War battles, the Osage Indian tribe, and Mickey Mantle—you'll find excellent interpretations of these and more historic events and people inside this 20,000-square-foot museum. One of the most unique displays is the world's longest (1,100 feet) hand-carved wooden chain, carved from 1981 to 1994 by James Porter. Porter and his chain made an appearance on The Tonight Show in 1989. Continue your search for history by picking up walking/driving tour brochures—for Civil War and historic sites and for downtown historic buildings.
