Civil War veterans purchased the southwest corner of this impressive cemetery in 1886 and named it Antietam Circle. A handsome cast-iron gateway donated by the DAR in 1911 leads to four bronze soldier statues each facing in different direction with many of the 300 Civil War graves encircling them. The two eight-inch cannons were gifts from the U.S. War Department in 1898, and a bald eagle sculpture stands atop the 1905 red-domed rotunda.
