
The Reverend Thomas Johnson, founder of the Shawnee Methodist Mission and for whom Johnson County was named, is buried here with members of his family. A proslavery supporter, Johnson was killed in 1865, purportedly by Southern sympathizers, after he swore allegiance to the Union cause.
