Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led the Corps of Discovery, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, into what is now the western portion of the United States. An exploration for scientific and commercial purposes, the journey spanned from May 1804 to September 1806, and 14 of those days were spent in Kansas. For the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial in 2004, many historical markers were established to recognize this expedition.
