Back roads beckon you to follow them for an immersion into the Flint Hills scenery. Essentials to have with you are a spare tire, road map (often no cell service), and water. This 17-mile gravel drive through the rolling hills is especially good during the early summer or early fall when the wildflowers and grasses are at their glorious peak. From Palmer, 1/4 mile east on Sharpes Creek across the railroad tracks, continue 11 miles stairstepping south and east on Sharpes Creek, then 6 miles west on 50 (becomes Little Cedar Creek) going toward Matfield Green. Grasses, creeks, pasture, cattle, and expanse accompany your route.
