Originally named Chellis, the name was changed to Kalida by Tom Davidson who bought the property in 1870. Kalida was the county seat in 1873, but when Yates Center was granted the honor in 1875, Kalida was moved. Today it is best known for the old stone gates that were left behind. Tom's son James attended the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and returned with architectural design ideas that he implemented in the gates at the south end of the property. They are rather astonishing to come upon out in the country. You may take pictures of the gates but do not enter the private property. Learn more about Kalida at the Woodson County Museum, 204 W. Mary.
